Function meets form - designs to carry for life
For Sophie Hulme, function always informs the continually-evolving and elegantly constructed form of the styles in the collections. For Pre Fall ‘17 the brand introduces the Catch Collection, a design project which explores function and use. Bags that work.
Designed to carry for life, rather than set aside after a season, every element of Sophie Hulme’s collections is innovated, engineered, structured. The Catch Collection is no exception. Minimal silhouettes, smooth saddle leather, polished gold hardware. Pieces to carry, to work, to last. No element of the design is superfluous, every detail matters.
First in the line-up - the cocktail stirrer bag. The shining apex, the polished heart of the bag is the catch. It centres around the design of a classic cocktail stirrer - made for a mixologist, useful for an evening, found at the bottom of a bag - a morning memento of an evening of margaritas. Set in bronze and gold-plated, it becomes a keepsake, an elegant evening essential, a celebration of usefulness.
With this style, as with the other designs in the catch collection, Sophie Hulme riffs on the traditional use of an everyday object. The cocktail stirrer, the straw, the whistle, are each locking devices; the central, functional element on a minimal design. A playful subversion of the function of these forms; an elegantly engineered bag to carry for day and night.
